Underground Quarry History
During the late 18th century, Paris faced severe public health crises stemming from overflowing urban cemeteries such as Saints-Innocents. City officials resolved to convert former subterranean limestone quarries into a consolidated ossuary.
Transfers of skeletal remains took place between 1785 and 1787, occurring exclusively under cover of night, accompanied by solemn religious processions.
Architectural Stacking & Decorative Ossuary
In 1810, Director Louis-Étienne Héricart de Thury organized the disorderly bone piles into artistic displays, interspersing long walls of skulls and tibias with poetic inscriptions and warnings regarding mortality.
